Clinical Observations on Herpes Zoster


Abstract
Clinical observations were made on 46 patients with herpes zoster who visited to depa¡þrtment of dermatology, Chungnam National University Hospital during last two years. The results were as follows:
1. The incidence of herpes zoster was 1.5% of total out-patients of dermatologic department.
2. Herpes zoster was more frequently seen in males than females, and more common in middle age group(third to 6th decades).
3. No seasonal preponderance was noticed in herpes zoster but it was least common in spring and most common in summer.
4. The thoracic, cervical, trigeminal and lumbosacral dermatomes were commonly affe¡þcted. In all cases except one, the eruptions were unilateral.
5. All patients complained subjective symptoms such as pain, itching, burning and prickling sensations.
6. Complications were occurred in two patients, one was herpes zoster ophthalmicus the other was neurogenic bladder dysfunction. In uncomplicated cases recovery is complete in two to three weeks.
